Looking for the best tips on how to organize your room?
Or better yet, want a simple and to the point, proven system that actually works and will give you a feeling of accomplishment and clarity? These tips for organizing have been carefully thought through, to help you break down the process of organizing any room in your home in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step process.
This post is about room organization steps that are straightforward and simple to follow. You just actually have to do them. With an open heart and mind. Remember that when your home is organized logically, and feels both aesthetically pleasing and is functional, your whole family wins. A beautiful, tidy, and organized space brings a sense of peace and calm to anyone in it.
Depending on the room and the size of the job, you may have to break this process up into multiple days. Just figure out what works for you, and get to it. If you need to get help, ask for a good friend or family member to help you tackle this project. Put on some fun music, open the windows and just start. After all, is said and done, you have no idea how unbelievable rewarding it will feel. Trust me, the hard work will be so worth it in the end!
The first step on how to organize your room is to tidy and deep clean it. Depending on which room of your house you’re organizing, you’ll want to do a general sweep through tossing out any junk, putting things away, and removing anything in the room that doesn’t belong. Overall, start with a general tidy, then do a deep clean. This means, scrubbing every inch of the room from top to bottom, left to right.
In this first initial step of organizing your room, don’t worry about sorting yet. Just focus solely on deep cleaning and tidying. Sorting is the next step in the room organization process.
Now that the room is crystal clean, now is time for the hardest part of the whole process. That’s right, it’s important we eat the frog and tackle the hardest part in the beginning. The best room organization tip I have for decluttering and sorting is to create sections to go through. For example, a media cabinet is separate from a shelf, which is separate from a dresser with drawers.
Create sections. If you need to, write down all the sections and check them off as you tackle each one. You’ll want to grab a few boxes and trash bags and create separate piles. For example, some piles might be trash, donate, keep in this room, or find a new home for this item.
This step is so important when you are organizing any room in your home. You want to ensure you only keep items in each room that truly belong there and that you actually use. Try watching the Marie Kondo documentary on Netflix for more inspiration on how to sort and declutter your home and life.
Now that the hard part is done, you’ve removed the trash, put the donated items in the garage, and found new homes for items, you should only be left with the stuff that is actually staying in the room you are organizing.
With this stuff, you’ll want to decide on an organization system. Some amazing places to find bins, tubs, and organizing containers are Ikea, Target, and The Container Store. You’ll have to decide what system works best for you but for example, organizing hanging items in a closet will be different than cosmetics in a bathroom drawer, or books on a bookshelf.
Whichever section you are organizing, just try to implement some sort of system that works for you. For example, you could organize books on a shelf by color code or in alphabetical order by the last name of the author. You could arrange cosmetics in drawer organizing bins and group them by similar products. Clothes in a closet can be sorted by article of clothing and color-coded.
Whatever works for you, just choose a system and implement it. And yes, the organizing containers can be pricey. But yes, they are worth it. You’ll literally have them forever and they will make your life so much simpler and more orderly. Just bite the bullet and get em.
Depending on the room, you might need to get a little creative with your storage solutions. For example, finding a storage ottoman to put blankets in the living room in is a nice way to double down. Finding an over-the-toilet bathroom cabinet is a great way to save space.
Ikea is known to have some amazing creative storage solutions that work for even the tiniest of spaces. Do some research, get creative, and find or create a home for every single thing you own. That is the ultimate key to organizing your room.
One of the best tips on how to organize your room is to visually declutter. This goes hand in hand with the previous steps to room organization. If you have alot of open shelving, you’ll want to get pretty bins or add doors to visually declutter.
Here is an example of how one person hid the clutter in their child’s play room. Imagine these shelves open, with all of the colorful toys of odd shapes and sizes. This person simple got some bins and baskets to put all the toys in. Not only is the room much more organized, but it is much more calming and appealing to look at.

Oftentimes, when shelves and rooms are visually overstimulating, it’s really stressful on the eye because so many colors and items are fighting for our visual attention. When things are simplified and clean-cut, it creates a much clearer and balanced vibe.
So now that’ you’re almost done with this whole room organization process, one of the last steps is to leave the room be, and then come in with a fresh pair of eyes when you’re ready. You can also ask someone else who you trust who hasn’t seen the room what they see when they come in.
When you’re able to look at your room with fresh eyes, after the work you’ve done so far, you can try to do even more. You might catch new things you didn’t notice before. The whole point here is to just refine and edit the work you’ve already done for an even better effect.
Lastly, the fun part is to observe your room from both an aesthetic and functional perspective. Now that the room is clean and tidy, just look at it and determine if the room feels right. If the furniture layout, patterns, and colors all make sense. Does the way it all ties together support your overall desired effect of the space?
For example, if you were organizing your home office, your end goal might be a clean, light, airy and fresh vibe. Maybe you have dark, heavy curtains in the room. Or maybe the desk is facing away from the window in a dark corner. By simply moving the desk closer to the window and maybe finding some light, sheer curtains, you’ll be able to create the effect you’re aiming for.
You don’t always need to hire a designer, although sometimes you definitely do lol. Sometimes though, there are some minor things you can do to completely change the feeling of a room in your home, and that often starts with cleaning and organizing it, and is complemented by rearranging furniture in a way that makes sense and is functional. It also helps to update some of the decor for a fresh and new feeling.
All in all, I really how this post helps you and taught you some valuable tips on how to organize your room. An organized home is a home that restores and brings a sense of calm to the spirit. I hope you have fun doing this project and that it brings you a sense of joy and accomplishment once it’s done!
