Best Fall Home Decor Tips for a Cozy Home

Homemaking

Fall is right around the corner, and that means it’s time for a roundup of some of my all-time favorite fall home decor tips!

I personally love decorating for the holidays and seasons. I think it keeps life exciting for both you, your family, and your guests. It is so enjoyable to really experience the fullness of each of the seasons. Welcoming changes, appreciating the variety of foods, smells, and colors that each season brings along is so rejuvenating.

It’s kind of tough to choose which season is the BEST but I’d definitely have to say that Fall and Winter take it home for me over Summer and Spring. I absolutely love everything about Fall. I love the weather, the foods, the smells, the colors, and everything else the wonderful season brings.

Plus, I absolutely love that Fall indicates that the Holiday season is RIGHT AROUND the corner!

Here are the best fall home decor tips so you can decorate your home to make it cozy and Pinterest-worthy for you, your family and your guests to enjoy!

Best Fall Home Decor Tips:

Fall vs. Halloween

One thing to consider when decorating your home for fall is the difference between fall decor and Halloween decor. See the difference of what I mean for decorative elements below:

Fall Decor

  • Leaves
  • Branches
  • Acorns
  • Pumpkins
  • Gourds and Squash
  • Cinnamon Sticks

Halloween Decor

  • Jack-O-Lanterns
  • Spiders
  • Spiderwebs
  • Witches
  • Ghosts
  • Candy Corn

The lists could go on forever, but you get the point. There are differences between decorating for Fall or Autumn, versus decorating for Halloween. All I’m sayin, is to take this into consideration. If you’re a big fan of both, I’d say decorate for Fall and Halloween in early October, then remove the Halloween decor after October 31st.

This will give you enough time to enjoy your fall decor before you need to start decorating for Christmas (typically right after Thanksgiving).

Don’t Overdo it

Often times when decorating for Fall (or Christmas for that matter) we can get very caught up in all of the million items out there, especially when they’re on major “sale.”

My best advice when decorating your home for ANY holiday or season is don’t overdo it. The last thing anyone wants is to walk into your home and be completely bombarded and smothered with so much decor, smells, and just… stuff going on!

Focusing on quality over quantity is one of my top fall home decor tips. It’s better to have fewer, really beautiful, striking pieces that speak to you, versus a ton of cheap niknaks everywhere you look. What ends up happening is people feel so overwhelmed and claustrophobic in these spaces that they don’t even notice the individual pieces because their eye is being pulled in so many directions.

Again, focus on quality over quantity. The best way to do this is to collect meaningful and special pieces over the years. Over a long period of time. Also, each year, make sure you refine your collection of seasonal decor and get rid of the old stuff, making room for any new pieces. Whenever I decorate for the seasons, I always make sure to reduce my collection by a few pieces each year. Over time, you will have maintained the perfect amount of decorative accents so you’re home won’t be drowning in decor once you put it all out.

Use Natural Elements

While there are so many shops and boutiques out there with the cutest pieces and accents, one of my favorite fall home decor tips is to use natural elements. Sometimes when your home feels too artificial and fake, it can feel less homey and comfortable.

Using natural elements and fragrances such as apples, cinnamon, pumpkin, or branches, leaves or acorns from outside, etc. can really make a difference. Wood, fur, leather, burley, and wool are also great natural materials to incorporate into your decor.

Adding rustic, natural, and organic touches to your bright orange porcelain pumpkins will definitely soften your space and make it feel more cozy and humble, which really is the whole vibe of fall anyway, right?

Don’t Overkill the Orange

This is another one of the most important fall home decor tips. Don’t overkill the freakin orange. Now, I won’t point any fingers, but I’ve definitely seen homes that are legit decked the eff out in orange during the fall. Like it’s honestly just too much. Orange pumpkins GALORE. Orange candles, orange pillows, orange table cloth, orange candy in a jar, just so. Much. Orange.

Bottom line?

Don’t forget about all the other colors! There are a ton of other beautiful colors for autumn. Sage, beige, gold, black, cream, cranberry.

There are a ton of really gorgeous colors for fall that you can incorporate instead of just a ton of orange. So while orange is great, don’t overdo it. Please.

Focus on All 5 Senses

This is not only one of my favorite fall home decor tips, but using all 5 senses is a super important decor tip for any room and any season. The true art in decorating and interior design lies in the experience of the room someone has when they enter it. There is so much more to a room than visuals. There are the sounds one hears, what they smell, feel, and taste.

Considering all 5 senses can totally elevate the experience of a room for yourself or your guests. When thinking about the five senses for fall, here are a few elements for each of the senses you can incorporate into your fall decor:

Sight: Plaid, Pumpkins, Gourds, Scarecrows, Branches, Fall flowers
Hear: Birds chirping, autumn breeze through the windows, or some smooth, cozy jazz playing lightly in the background
Smell: Cinnamon, Vanilla, Maple, Cedar, Bonfire
Touch: Fur, Leather, Burlap, Wood, Sherpa, Suede
Taste: Cinnamon, Apple, Caramel, Brown Sugar, Maple, Pear, Pomegranate, Cider

All in all, think about the 5 senses when decorating your home this fall. You’ll be amazing at how your room comes to life when you have this intention and focus.

Use Pinterest as Inspiration

One of my favorite resources for pretty much everything in my life (lol) is Pinterest. For certain areas in your home, try checking it out for inspiration and ideas. You can search things like “fall porch decor” or “fall bathroom decor ideas” or “fall table setting ideas.” Try to look at each section somewhat individually, rather than being overwhelmed by trying to decorate the whole house all at once. If you focus on and have the intention of perfecting just a few spaces, it will have much more of an impact.

There are so many ideas on Pinterest for you to find different examples of how to decorate the different spaces throughout your home. If you get stuck, hop onto Pinterest!

Clean While You Decorate

The final fall home decor tip I have for you, which also applies to decorating for really any season, is to clean while you decorate. As you remove neutral decor and make space for seasonal decor, make sure you’re dusting and wiping accordingly.

I think cleaning while decorating is a great way to kill two birds with one stone, plus, once everything is out and situated, your home will sparkle and look so new and clean and pretty. It might take a bit longer, but trust me, you won’t regret it!

I hope you loved these fall home decor tips I shared with you! I hope you enjoy this fall season fully and make the most of it!
