The Ultimate Guide to Selecting the Best Flatware Set

Lifestyle

Looking for advice on how to select the best flatware set?

I’ve got you covered. We were in this predicament when we moved into our first apartment. Then, this big decision came up again when we built our wedding registry. Selecting every single item for your home, especially your flatware can get to be overwhelming. There are so many options on the market at varying prices, different materials, and so on. I did the research so you don’t have to.

This guide will tell you exactly what you need to know to select the best flatware set for your family that will last forever and never go out of style.

What to Consider When Selecting the Best Flatware Set:

The Quantity of the Flatware Set

When selecting your flatware set, you’ll want to consider how many people you typically serve and will serve in the future. The reason it’s important to consider the future is because if you end up needing more flatware, you might not be able to purchase another set if it goes out of stock. For our wedding registry, we ordered two 20 piece flatware sets. This means we had 8 of each piece.

Between the big forks, small forks, big spoons, small spoons, and knives, you’ll want to make sure you have enough of everything for when you entertain. If you have a big family, you might even consider getting 10 or 12 of each piece. Either way, just keep in mind the quantity of what you think you’ll need now and in the future as your family grows.

Best Flatware Material

If you remember anything from this post, let it be this. When selecting your flatware you want to ALWAYS look for a composition of 18/10. This will always be listed in the product description on the website. When it says 18/10, this means that the stainless steel is made of 18% chromium and 10% nickel. This specific composition is going to give you the best long-term durability as well as prevent any rust spots from forming.

The biggest thing when selecting the best flatware set is to not get anything under 18/10. DO NOT get 18/0 or 18/8. You want 18/10. Unless you are looking to replace your set every year, just make sure you get this composition.

Best Flatware Color

Some people might want a fun color for their flatware sets like gold or matte black. Usually, you can find these colors in 18/10 if you really look hard, but it can be a bit more difficult. It’s usually much easier to find 18/10 in your classic stainless steel. That being said, take this into consideration if you are looking for a trendy-colored set. You’re usually going to be safer with stainless steel color because it’s easier to make and more abundant and therefore more affordable. It will also never go out of style, I mean for the past however many years we’ve still been calling it “silverware.”

Best Flatware Set Options:

Best Flatware Design

Depending on the general style of your home and dinnerware set, you’ll want to consider the style of your flatware set. This also affects the way the piece feels as you hold it. You want it to be a nice experience, not uncomfortable to hold or awkward in your hand. Whether you prefer a more vintage, ornate design or a sleek and modern style is completely up to you. Just be cautious of how it feels in your hand. Always test it for a couple of meals if you order it online.

Keep in mind too, that the more shiny finishes tend to show more water spots and scratches. The matte finishes can be a bit dull and not as glossy. We personally chose a flatware set that was somewhere in between. Not too glossy and not too matte. I also made sure to select a handle with a hammered effect to hide any fingerprints and scratches over time. These are all things to consider when selecting the best flatware set.

I hope this post helps you understand what to look for vs. what to avoid when choosing the best flatware set for your home.
