Best First Apartment Checklist:
Kitchen Essentials: What You Should Buy for Your Kitchen
When moving into your first home or apartment, stocking the kitchen can be one of the most important steps. The kitchen, after all, is the heart of the home and the place where you’ll probably spend a lot of time. Something to consider is that you’ll want to be smart with the items you buy for your kitchen. While you certainly don’t need to get everything top of the line, getting cheap, low-quality items for your kitchen could end up costing you in the long run.
For us, we purchased some lower to midline items for our kitchen initially, and then when we got married, we were able to put a bit nicer, longer-lasting items on our registry.
The top 5 kitchen essentials you’ll need to move in are:
4. Pots and Pans
5. Kitchen Knives
Bedroom Essentials: What You Should Buy for Your Bedroom
When moving into your first apartment or your first home, you’ll need to get your bedroom set up. I’d recommend investing in a quality mattress. We are big fans of Purple Mattress. It’s affordable, high quality, and oh-so-comfy. When getting a mattress, you want to invest in it because quality sleep is one of the most important things in your life. It affects your overall health and longevity in life. Mattresses are something that lasts a really long time when you get a nice one. The good ones usually last about 10 years on average. If you can’t afford to invest much in a mattress right away, I recommend getting this Ikea Haugesund Mattress and this Lucid 3-inch mattress topper. This is an ultra-comfy combination that will hold up for about a year or two. Eventually, though, make sure you get a nice mattress.
The top 5 bedroom essentials you’ll need to move in are:
1. Bed Frame
3. Sheets & Bedding
Bathroom Essentials: What You Should Buy for Your Bathroom
You’ll see on your first apartment checklist the section with all the bathroom items you’ll need. You’ll want to prioritize this section for the second you get the keys to your apartment. If I’ve learned anything while moving so many times it’s that you want to have your bathroom equipped. I’d recommend having toilet paper as the number one moving day essential. You want people who are helping you move in to be able to use the bathroom!
Honestly, if you could include all of these essentials you’re gold. Some of you or your friends who are helping might want to take a quick shower after moving since it can get pretty sweaty and dirty. You’ll also want to make sure you have soap so you guys can wash your hands if they get dirty while moving.
The top 5 bathroom essentials you’ll need to move in are:
1. Bath and Hand Towels
2. Shower Curtain
4. Soap Dispenser
5. Toilet Paper
Entryway Essentials: What You Should Buy for Your Entryway
Having a beautiful entryway is one of my first apartment essential tips. The entryway is someone’s first impression of your home and your story. It can really create a warm and welcoming effect on anyone who enters your home if you set it up nicely. Your entryway does not need to be fancy or expensive to be cute and inviting. Here’s a list of the top 5 entryway essentials to include in your entryway starter pack for right when you move in.
A bench for people to sit and tie their shoes is always a really nice touch if you have the space. A welcome mat is essential for outside of your front door so people can wipe their shoes and brush away any dirt before entering your home. An entry rug is a textile to create a soft and warm welcome for people to walk on when they enter. Obviously a coat rack or coat closet is convenient and a pretty important touch for any entryway. And lastly, a beautiful candle. Always light a candle in your entryway 30 minutes before guests arrive. The smell will be so inviting and cozy and the fire flame is warm and aesthetically pleasing.

Laundry Essentials: What You Should Buy for Your Laundry Room
As part of the best first apartment checklist laundry room starter pack, I recommend getting a split laundry hamper. This honestly will just make your life so much easier since you can sort colors and whites as you go throughout the week. It really just eliminates the extra step of sorting when you do laundry.
I’m also really big on non-toxic living as best as possible. I’m not perfect with it, but I truly believe that if you can cut out a few things here and there it’s always better than nothing. This Nellie’s Laundry Soda is totally non-toxic and fragrance-free. It cleans the clothes well, keeps them in good condition, and is mild yet still effective. I’m a big fan. I also use wool dryer balls in the dryer instead of dryer sheets. You can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the wool dryer balls for an added scent.
This Downy Wrinkle Spray is a life saver. When the head from the iron is applied to the clothes, the wrinkle spray is activated and totally helps to make your clothes crisp and fresh. Not to mention it smells like heaven. I like to spritz this on my furniture and curtains every so often. Don’t overdo it, but sometimes a quick spritz adds a layer of freshness and makes the room smell like fresh laundry.
Best Iron to Buy
This Rowenta Iron is the goat of all irons. I’ve made the mistake of buying a cheap iron and let me tell you, they don’t freakin work. I’m not really sure what it is, maybe the technology of the metal or something I have no clue. All I know is the Rowenta iron is the best iron to buy. Rowenta is known for this and has been around since our grandma’s days. Just like I mentioned with the mattress, don’t skimp on your iron. Everyone needs a good iron, and by getting a good one now, you’ll end up having it for many many years, versus having to buy a new one several times.
The top 5 laundry essentials you’ll need to move in are:

2. Laundry Detergent
3. Wool Dryer Balls
4. Wrinkle Spray
